Bruno Latour, professor emeritus, Sciences Po, Paris: "We no longer live on the same planet". A Conference-Performance.
“We no longer live on the same planet”: a trite assertion. But what if it was true? This new conference performance aims to establish a parallel between the situation of the bewilderment felt by Florentines and Venetians of 1610 due to Galileo’s claims on the Earth’s position in the universe, with that of our contemporaries who learn once again from Jim Lovelock and Lynn Margulis that the Earth does not occupy its expected space. While the people of 1610 needed to process the shock that “the Earth moves”, in 2019, it is necessary to accept the even more surprising fact that “the Earth is itself moving”—that it quivers and reacts in response to human actions; including in opposition to all development projects. Galileo turned not only the cosmological, but the political and social orders on their heads. Similarly, Lovelock and Margulis force us to change our vision of the world and our comprehension of the cosmos. As a result, we once again need to reevaluate every level of organization of our society.
