A common feature underpinning research undertaken at the Department is the historical investigation of society's knowledge institutions and their dynamics. The formation and circulation of knowledge about nature, the human body and culture are of central concern. Our research in these areas is focused chronologically on the early modern and modern periods and geographically on Western and Northern Europe.
