Luciana Costa Lima Thomaz, Centro Simão Mathias de Estudos em História da Ciência - CESIMA: "The Composition of Linnaeus’ Diaeta Naturalis"
‘Caroli Linnaei Diaeta Naturalis’ was the title Linnaeus has chosen to illustrate his early manuscript that would propably be published as a book in the future. In the title page, Linnaeus indicates the ‘principia’ he would follow to compose his aphorisms or rules to live a better and longer life. Zoology, iatrophysics, animal economy and theology were some of the principles in which Linnaeus could think about ways of transforming the precarious manner in which men were taking care of their own health. The wrong attitudes men were taking in their diaeta were leading them to earlier and more severe illnesses, according to Linnaeus. This seminar attempts to focus on the combination of knowledge used by Linnaeus in Diaeta naturalis, what makes this work quite peculiar among the dietary rules in the Eighteenth-century Medicine, at the same time, indicating Linnaeus's way of conceiving human physiology and conducting men to a more 'Natural' lifestyle.
