Kelly J. Whitmer. Professor of History, Sewanee, University of the South: "Educational Travel and the Entrepreneurial Observator, c. 1650-1750"
Efforts to create new programs and techniques for generating techno-scientific expertise were ongoing throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and informed the utopian schemes of many self-styled natural philosophers, theologians and projector-economists. This presentation will consider the schemes of one of these individuals, a councilor of commerce named Paul Jacob Marperger (1656-1730). Specifically, it will consider strategies he developed for teaching young men how to see in a useful way, including how to assimilate information and to imagine new uses for the things they observed during their travels.
